THE STORY anner’s home life was never phenomenal, but it was never uncharacteristically terrible. Like most north American homes, his was broken. His mother, Carrie, was always there for him. Despite the rumours that circulated about her neglective tenancies, he was rather fond of her. Carrie McClough had been sixteen the first time she’d met his father, Bradford Scott. He was older, much older, a student-teacher studying at her school. The six years age difference was enough to make it seem like the most scandalous thing in the entire world, but Carrie and Brad didn’t care. His touch had always felt like wildfire against her pale skin, his dark skin always making the contrast evident. The two were entirely opposite, Carrie was sweet and innocent, Brad a rather notorious douche bag with a record of breaking hearts. But he’d promised her, “Not you Carrie. Never you.” Little did either of them know that one summer night in the back of his truck would result in life altering events, the sixteen year old—nearly seventeen—became impregnated with his child, she held off telling him until it was much too late to do anything overly drastic. She couldn’t bring herself to abort a child, she never could. Brad didn’t know what to do when the news spread, people started looking at the couple. For a while, she lied and said it was her current boyfriend’s child. But everyone had their suspicions. Eventually, Brad couldn’t take the lies any longer and proposed. Carrie gladly accepted, in her mind she couldn’t love anyone more so than she loved this man. And at the time, she couldn’t of. She and Brad were meant for each other, so it seemed. What he lacked, she made up for and vice versa. But that only lasted a while, shortly after news of their engagement had spread all hell broke loose. Parents called the school, ordering the immediate resignation of one rather infamous student-teacher, and Carrie’s father ordered her to call all of it off and give up the child. But both held strong to what they had, and at that point it was simply one another. The teasing and lack of employment got so terrible that they needed to move away, the two packed their bags and moved to Vegas. Everything was accepted there, right? Wrong. People still found ways to discriminate against the odd couple, but jobs were easier to obtain. Carrie hated the life she’d forced herself into, and as the nine months ventured on, so did Brad. The two angry people had a rather attractive son, his skin was somewhat tanned but not so dark as to be an exact replica of his father. He looked an awful lot like him, a thick head of dark brown hair and eyes that could see through just about anything. He wasn’t as loved as he could have been though, the night after Tanner was born Bradford lost it. He began consuming way too much alcohol, coming home late at night. He hated the life he’d chosen. He hated his wife, he hated his son. And in turn, his son learned to hate him. Carrie always felt bad for bringing tanner into such a horrible situation, but Tanner hardly noticed it at first. The tension was normal, he’d been born into something and therefore to him it had become normal. One night, his father just got fed up. Tanner was seven, and Bradford decided he couldn’t’ stand living like this any longer. He turned to music, a long lost passion of his. Slowly, Tanner and Carrie watched him drift away. He decided almost immediately after that night that he was done being a man of the family, though he never had been much of one regardless. He left the small family on the twentieth of march, not caring much for the tears in his own son’s eyes. And Tanner stopped believing in happy endings and innocence that day. He never looked back, and neither would Tanner. Growing up, Tanner wasn’t much the trendsetter. Though he was rather social, he preferred to follow trends. Upon meeting Katie at a party, he knew he’d met his match. Whether or not he believed ni love, he sure as hell believed in lust. He wanted the girl he couldn’t have, she was dynamite for all intents and purposes, a spitfire with the popularity that matched his own. He played football, she was a cheerleader, she could clearly kill with her eyes and he could clearly resist some of the temptation. They bickered, they always bickered, but secretly Tanner harboured a sort of longing for her. If he believed in love, he’d peg it so. So, when the opportunity arose to fool around…he took it. Did that make him a bad person? He didn’t think so. He thought it made him a man of his word, after all hadn’t he promised to be more the man than his father? And didn’t sex give you that gratification? So young Tanner, only a sophomore at the time, happened to bump into Katie, a freshman at that time, and one kiss led to another. That kiss led to more. Soon both were up in his bedroom; he hadn’t meant to be so keen. But he was. He loved every moment with her, though he’d never admit it. He could finally understand those sparks, not unlike the wildfire he’d earlier described, that his mother had described. Each touch felt so forbidden, so wrong. But so right all at once. After, when he’d thought about what he’d taken from her…he felt bad. Though, she’d taken his as well. It always seemed to be less of a big deal when a guy lost his virginity, more like a sign he was matured and ready for the real world. But Tanner was confused, did he love her? Probably. The pent up passion had to be more than just lust. But he passed it off, their fling officially ending with that last leap of victory. The sex was great, but hey. Who needs more than sex? That sort of started Tanner on a downwards spiral, he fucked around with most of the cheerleaders, and some of the less popular girls as well. No one was off the docket. Until he found out Katie was pregnant at the exact same age his mother had been pregnant with her, seventeen and about to have a baby. Mind you, Carrie had been a year her junior, but never the less. It was the same ideal, was his father going make a return? He sure hoped not. He needed to know she’d be taken care of, despite their playful bantering he really did care about her. He hated that Leon had done this to her, he actually felt the urge to kill the bastard for being so careless. How could he? Would he abandon her? So many questions, so few answers; but Tanner would have his answers. He’d protect Katie. She had so many men who wanted her, but did any really want her for what she needed? He wasn’t sure. So, with a resigned sigh, tanner was prepared to do whatever it took to make Katie his again. He just needed to unwrap himself from her little finger and make her squirm first. And that on its own would be the biggest challenge the young man had ever faced.
