Born and raised in Yucca Mountain, Nevada, she was quickly shown the correct way to live. Katie was taught manners. She was sheltered from the evil world around her. Her parents strived to keep it that way until her oldest brother, Dustin James Maddox, died in a car accident when she was eight. He was seventeen then. Dustin’s death threw all of the family off-kilter. Katie no longer had anyone to look up to, and she was being forced into the “good example” position, something she wasn’t ready for at all. They all coped in different ways. Her father spent more time at the church. Her mother was pregnant, so she tried to keep herself occupied with that. Her two twin sisters, Amy and Harper, were too young to know exactly what was wrong. Katie struggled to find something to keep her mind off of his death until she danced. It was meant to be from the start. One of Katie’s good friends offered to take her to her dance studio for “Take a Friend” night. Katie found she was surprisingly good at it, and after a little coaxing, her parents agreed to sign her up for it. She danced around the house. She danced around the playground at school. She danced up until Freshman year in high school before things changed. Life in high school was much different than what she was accustomed to. There were mean girls, cute boys, and a lot of drama to accompany them. Katie, being somewhat gullible, fell into their grubby little hands before she could say no. She planned on trying out for the dance team, but the cheerleaders had other plans. They liked Katie’s spunk. She’d do for now. As they instructed, Katie tried out for the team. They didn’t think she’d make it, but she did, and most of their plans fell through after that. Katie liked the popularity. She liked the way people knew her. She belonged to a group, and boys liked her. They’d never given her much thought before, passing her off as a goody-two-shoes Mormon girl. Katie, yearning to prove herself, went out on a limb and asked out a football player. When he said yes, she was absolutely stoked. They dated for a while. One night after a football game, they set out behind the bleachers and, as Katie for so long thought, sinned. Everything had happened so fast, and she left him that night different. They dated for a little while longer, making love at least twice more before Katie decided to end it. Honestly, she was afraid of him. She was afraid of he made her feel. No one made her feel that way until Leon Labeau came along. Katie had already known him as a friend-of-a-friend’s brother. Seeing as she was drunk, it didn’t take much for her to seduce him. She meant it as a one night stand. He was three years older than her. Around four weeks later, Leon Labeau completely forgotten, Katie tested positive as pregnant. Naturally, she cried. The next morning, she raced over to Leon’s house and told him everything. She told him that she was pregnant and she told him she wanted an abortion before word got out about her condition. If anyone knew about it, her Queen Bee status would be crush, swept away, nothing more. She couldn’t let that happen. At first, Leon agreed to it. At the last minute, he stopped her. It was beginning to seem like he was the only one who could derail her from anything. Begrudgingly, Katie kept the baby and coped with the events that soon followed. She told her parents, they kicked her out. She moved in with Leon’s family, and they later purchased an apartment. They dated, and upon Kora being born, Katie knew she loved him. As Katie’s affections for him grew stronger, so did her fear. In the end, her fear won her over and she cheated on him. Leon was furious, of course. He threw her out of his life, keeping Kora. Katie didn’t have many friends left and her parents refused to take her back in. Luckily, one of the girls on the cheer squad, Angela, reached out to her. Angela’s parents were sympathetic towards Katie’s situation. Although she hated relying on anyone, Angela’s family was good to her. They loved Kora when Katie cared for her, and after a while, Katie almost felt a part of the family. When she graduated, Angela’s family roared as she walked across the stage. Her parents were absent. Leon was, too. He’d already left to play pro football, and little Kora sat happily in Angela’s mother’s lap. Kora resembled Leo immensely. Looking at her, it was easy for Katie to see Leon. After graduation, Katie decided it was time for her to provide for Kora on her own. She continued to stay with Angela but she strived to get a job. Eventually, she’d find her own apartment. It was a tough journey at best. She worked at various places, juggling Kora and a job happened to be quite the chore. Just when she was on the verge of giving up, the light at the end of the tunnel brightened. She was on the way to the store when she met him. Angela’s car broke down and he’d been kind enough to help her out. He admitted he knew little about cars, but he’d be happy to drive her the rest of the way. Katie found out a lot about him in that time. Somehow, he coaxed her situation out of her. Sympathetic, he made her a proposal. As much as she hated relying on anyone, his offer was too good to resist. For once, her pride stepped down for the sake of Kora. He drove her to the salon to meet his grandmother. She was the manager at Absolutely You, and after hearing her story, she couldn’t turn her away. With that being said, Katie made herself at home in the small apartment above the salon. She wasn’t certified enough to cut hair yet, so she shouldered a kind of janitorial role. Her white knight popped in often. They grew to be great friends, and he was amazing with Kora. Katie felt safe with him, invincible. They knew each other for about nine months before he decided to make a move on her. By then, her affections for him had strengthened, and, feeling it was time to move on, she agreed to have dinner with him. In fact, they even brought Kora, which was something she wasn’t accustomed to when it came to the other guys she dated. Somehow, Katie knew he’d always be there for her. He helped her in her greatest time of need, and now she was taking a leap. They’ve dated ever since. Just recently, he had even convinced Katie to approach her parents again. She doubted they’d listen, but his confidence made her want to think they would. He accompanied, of course. She told them about the job at the salon, how she’d been making a living for herself, and he surprised all of them—even Katie—by confessing she’d be moving in with him. Shocked, but surprisingly calm about the situation, that’s exactly what Katie did. Her parents, iffy to accept her after what she’d done, and his grandmother were overjoyed. Hushed murmurs of wedding dates flew through the air like fireworks, but he made sure to reassure Katie they were joking around. Looking at Kora still painstakingly reminded her of Leo, and she refused to watch football, but Katie didn’t think of him as often as she once did. Katie keeps in touch with Leo’s relatives in Yucca Mountain so that Kora knows her father’s family. Her boyfriend completely understands even though he sometimes wishes Kora could be purely his. Over all, Katie is content with her life. She’s happy where she is with her boyfriend, daughter, and job. After working for three grueling years, she finally achieved—with help—the life Kora deserves to live, which is a very exciting thing. BEHIND THE MASK ALIAS char ROLEPLAY EXPERIENCE three years FOUND US my mind. CODE WORD admin edit OTHER CHARACTERS none yet (: ROLEPLAY EXAMPLE Today was completely, utterly, insanely unreal. She was a bedhog at best, but she knew what an alarm clock was. Usually. Today seemed to be the exception. She threw aside her sheets and bolted to the bathroom to shower. Sawyer was running a tad late. Actually, tad was an understatement. She couldn’t remember ever being so rushed! At the rate she was going, she’d miss the bus and everything. The fear drove her forward, but the end result was grim. She missed the bus by a matter of minutes and Shaun was less-than happy to find out he’d have to drive her to school. “I’m sorry,” she muttered smally. Shaun gave her a look and laughed. “Brighten up, Scout. I was thinking about calling in sick today anyways. I have things to take care of.” Sawyer glanced in his direction quizzically, but she was bereft of a response. Ignoring it without ease, Sawyer stared at the window. Her filly in the pasture winnied as they passed, and the dogs playfully ran along the fence. Her father’s farm was kind of like a haven for her. She had her horse, the dogs, a few barncats, and plenty of space to be herself. It was much better than facing the wrath of her first period witch-teacher. She arrived at school nearly fifteen minutes late, and Ms. Johnson was far from pleased. Sawyer slunk into her desk awkwardly after admitting the reason behind coming in late. The class snickered thoughtlessly, and Sawyer fell red in the face. “Please take a seat, Miss Donaghue,” the witch teacher demanded. “I have a class to teach.” Basically, her embarassing entrance was the icing on the cake. It was too expired to be sweet, and the entire class period holed up in class left Sawyer gasping for clean air. When the bell chimed at approximately nine-thirty, Sawyer was anxious to break free. She planned on sneaking right passed the witch unnoticed, but she had other plans. “Sawyer?” she called, and Scout stopped dead in her tracks. “Lunch detention for being tardy.” Great. Just Great. Sawyer nodded sheepishly and scurried into the hall. Hailey was waiting by their lockers as usual, and Sawyer relayed the morning’s events. She was sympathetic in her Hailey kind of way, and they walked together to second period. One class period down, two more before lunch. They were easier to handle than the first. By the time lunch rolled around, Sawyer had almost forgotten all about her punishment. Almost. She was walking leisurely to the lunchroom to meet up with Hailey and their usual crew when someone stopped her in the halls. “Don’t you have to go to Johnson’s?” they asked, and Sawyer’s palm met her face. She turn-tailed and began walking frantically to the witch’s room. She walked right in as soon as the bell chimed, not late but nowhere near early. “Have a seat,’ Johnson ordered. Without another thought, Sawyer obliged. After all, it was only fifteen minutes of her forty-five minute lunch. It was no big deal… Oh, but it was. By the end of it, Sawyer’s eyes were glued to the clock. She knew better to excuse herself, so she waited and waited until Johnson realized it was time for her to go. “That’ll be all,” she said, and off Sawyer went. The freshman pranced into the Cafeteria with a newly optimistic smile on her face. She found Hailey’s blonde head at their usual table and made their way to it hastily. In fact, she almost bumped into someone with a plate full of the mystery gunk the school sold! Luckily, she dodged him near the last minute. She stumbled over to the lunch table and quickly took her seat. She smiled at her best friend and then at everyone else. “Sorry I’m late, guys. Johnson.” She shook her head, chuckling softly before her round of smiles continued. As soon as she passed Kyle, she recognized a new face. She’d seen him hang out with Kyle before, but she’d never been properly introduced. Sawyer smiled brighter at him. He was cute. With that in mind, she couldn’t resist saying, “What’s crackalackin, hot lips?” her grin slowly widening. She was joking, of course. Hailey elbowed her in the ribs. |
