THE STORY new york, new york, 1989. mason faulkner and anderson kade had been best friends all through school, becoming absolutely inseparable by the sixth grade. they became like sons to each other's respective families, and it was no surprise to anyone when they both left their city of new orleans to go study in new york. it was, however, a surprise to everyone when, in nineteen eighty-nine - five years after they had left their hometown - they received a letter from the two instead of the usual visit. we're gay; having a kid. love us or leave us. there was an uproar in louisiana, their families divided. mason's mother, little sister, and eldest brother took up for the two, as did andy's father and uncle. the rest of the clan, however, did not, either choosing to ignore it or remaining unsure. it was maeve, mason's sister, who sent the letter back, with one word written at the bottom: always. the two men, then, and their roommate and very pregnant surrogate mother - a woman they had met in university, who had became the third in the trio of best friends - prepared for their child's birth with hopeful hearts. at least someone still loved them. christine gave birth on the first day of nineteen ninety - an agonizing and surprising process. they had refused to know the gender of the child, asking that the doctor tell them only if it was healthy. the doctor took this to mean, oh no, don't tell us if there's an extra one in there, it's fine. and thus, after much cursing and crying and screaming in both joy and pain, the two under-prepared men left their friend and two infant in the hospital while they shopped for a second set of everything. they finally brought their beautiful children home a week later, settling them into a new life in the three bedroom apartment. the first few years were rocky - little mattilyn and her brother were always escaping their crib to climb into bed with their daddy and papa, and there was one mishap where the little boy called chris their 'mama', which was quickly corrected to 'auntie'. the two grew, though, and never found it odd that they had two daddies, and no mommy. when mattilyn was twelve her fathers, for the first time ever, attended a parent-teacher conference together. all of her teachers before had assumed her other parent - for mason had always gone - was simply busy and probably a woman. miss rodson, then, was very surprised when two well-dressed men entered her classroom and introduced themselves as mattie's parents. a quick look of disgust had passed over her features, and little mattie - quick, observant little mattie - had noticed it before she managed to put a smile on her face. a tingling feeling ran down the child's arms, exiting her fingers and charring the wood of the wall behind her. she had screamed, leaping away to her daddy masie, while the teacher ran for a fire extinguisher. the school blamed it on bad wiring. mattie, however, knew better. the girl had began her musical arts education at three. christine, who had minored in some form of music - mattie could never remember what - began teaching her to play piano; at four she picked up the violin. she excelled in music, going on to singing at five and attending music camps at seven. it was a natural talent, one she adored and honed through the years. she attended choir classes in middle and high school, juggling that with her own private lessons and experiments. it made her feel alive, happy, and free. she grew closer and closer to her brother as opposed to farther away; he was her anchor and confidant, and she his. at the age of sixteen she began working at a music camp she had previously attended. the memory of her last day of work is just a blurry as her first. there was an accident - a fight had broken out between two of the older children - and she had become too stressed, to the point where she couldn't control herself. the sparks that ghosted down her arm intensified, and she had stepped away from the children, holding her hands behind her back. a sudden surge shot through her, catching the wall on fire - a fire that quickly spread to the rest of the building. in her haste to evacuate she fell, hitting her head against a table, rendering her unconscious. another staff member had to drag her out. she stayed in the hospital overnight, guilt gnawing at her. they were investigating the cause of the fire - and soon they would realize that there had been no faulty wiring, no gas leak or anything of the sort. it was a fire set by a freak. the family of three left the apartment, their aunt, and new york the next day. yucca mountain, nevada, was where they moved. the twins were enrolled in the high school, they made new friends, and everything was fine and dandy. they were surrounded by like people, they got good grades, and they had each other. provided they didn't give into the wild lifestyle of university, what could go wrong?
